Dual-processing theory
Information that is processed on two separate tracks; conscious deliberate “high road”; unconscious automatic “low road”; Allows consciousness to deal w/new challenges while unconscious automatically handles routine business
Selective Attention
The focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus
Cocktail Party Effect
Your ability to attend to only one voice among many
Inattentional blindness
Failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere
Sleep
periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness
Circadian rhythm
Biological clock; regular bodily rhythms (e.g temperature and wakefulness) occurring on 24 hour cycle
NREM-1
Slow breathing and irregular brainwaves; May experience images resembling hallucinations, sensation of falling or floating
NREM-2
Awakened pretty easily, but clearly asleep; Periodic sleep spindles- burst of rapid brain activity

Deep slow-wave sleep

AKA paradoxical sleep because muscles are relaxed but other body systems are active
Narcolepsy
Happens especially when experiencing uncontrollable sleep attacks
Insomnia
persistent problems in falling or staying asleep; reduces REM sleep; can lead to tolerance
Sleep apnea
periodically stop breathing during sleep
Night terrors
State of high arousal and appearance of being terrified while in NREM-3
