Describe how pulse oximetry works

A

Device is strapped to patient’s wrist

Stores data of O2 saturation and pulse over sleep

Small rises in pulse shows upper airway obstruction

Q

Describe the presentation of narcolepsy?

A

Cataplexy

Excessive daytime somnolence

19
Q

What is cataplexy?

A

Episodes in which the patient collapses to the floor somewhat asleep yet still awake

Usually occurs when emotional

20
Q

What is the management of narcolepsy?

A

Sleepiness:

  • Modafinil

Cataplexy:

  • Clomipramine
  • Sodium Oxybate
