What are the DSM Criteria for insomnia?
Primary complain of unsatisfying sleep quantity or quality w presence of 1 or more of the following
- Difficulty with sleep initiation
- Difficulty with sleep maintenance
- Early morning awakening
Sleep compliant is associated w social, occupational, academic, educational, behavioural or functional distress or impairment
Sleep complaint occurs at least 3 nights a week, and has been present for at least 3 months
Sleep difficulties happens even with ample opportunity to sleep
Sleep complaint is not attributed to or explained by another sleep-wake disorder, the adverse effect of a medication or substance, or a coexisting psychiatric illness or medical condition
What are the DSM-5 specifications on insomnia duration?
- Episodic – lasting 1-3 months
- Persistent – lasting ≥3 months
- Recurrent – experiencing ≥2 episodes within 1 year
What is defined as acute insomnia?
Sleep difficulties for 1 night to few weeks
What is defined as chronic insomnia?
Sleep difficulties ≥3 nights/weeks for ≥1/12
