What is insomnia?
inability to get enough sleep to feel rested
affects 10% chronically and 25% acutely
caused generally by physical and psychological distress
medication can lead to dependency and rebound insomnia
What is sleep apnea?
also related to insomnia, it is the failure to breath while sleeping so you wake up throughout the night – can lead to insomnia
What is narcolepsy?
sleeping at odd times, symptoms include: sleep attack, cataplexy, and sleep paralysis
the causes of narcolepsy include components of REM that are activated at the wrong times of the day
there is a genetic basis where orexin dysfunctions due to genetic inheritance
treatment involves medication (Modafinil, a stimulant and orexin agonist)
What is a sleep attack?
sudden urger to sleep
lasts for about 2-5 minutes and is stimulated by monotony
What is cataplexy?
REM paralysis that is triggered during waking – you are awake but cannot wake up completely to control your motor functions
stimulated by physical or emotional arousal
What is sleep paralysis?
occurs prior to sleep onset or at waking
Hypnagogic hallucinations can also occur, these are dream intrusions while in sleep paralysis
What is REM sleep behavior disorder?
REM without atonia (means that you are acting out your dreams, which is not normal, usually your body is paralyzed while you are in REM sleep)
What is somnambulism?
it is a slow-wake sleep disorder that is characterized by sleep walking
SWS disorders in children usually go away as you get older
What is paver nocturnus?
SWS disorder that is characterized by night terrors
What is a sleep-related eating disorder?
eating while you are asleep, eating is not recalled and can lead to weight gain
