Importance
Sleep deprivation increases the chance of depression, anxiety, and illness.
Harder to concentrate and respond quickly
Psychology of sleep
- Hypothalamus (Circadian Rhythm -GABA)
- Pineal Gland (Melatonin- Regulates sleep cycle)
- Basal Forebrain (Adenosine & Acetylcholine - Promote REM sleep)
- Brain Stem (Lover activity in arousal centers and Relaxes body)
Melatonin
Melatonin does not make you fall asleep.
It calm and quite you. Reduces the stress hormone cortisol, slows breathing, decreases energy storage and settles you so that you can sleep.
Rather than taking melatonin, try to minimize screen time and darken your room.
The stages of sleep
- Awake (Beta wave - awake normal alert consciousness) ; they are the most inconsistent brain wave
- Alpha (physically and mentally relaxed; awake but drowsy) ; reflect brain activity that is less frequent, more consistent and more intense.
NON REM Stages
Stage 1 (N1) : “falling asleep” stage is marked by theta waves
Stage 2 (N2) : “light sleep” ; represents about half of the total sleep time
Stage 3 (N3): “deepest sleep” ; Abnormalities occurs
REM
The first period of REM sleep is 90 minutes after falling asleep.
Where most of the dream occurs.
Insomnia
Defined as persistent difficulty falling or staying asleep.
Can be temporary or can last for years.
Causes:-
Stress, Irregular sleep schedules, Lifestyle, Mental Health Disorders, Physical pain, Medications, Neurological disorders, Age, Pregnancy etc.
Sleep Trouble
A common reason we can’t sleep is worry.
Physical pain can also make it hard to sleep.
Interruption is sleep schedules.
Sleep Apnea
Is it pauses in breathing that last at least 10 seconds during sleep, caused by an obstruction of the walls of throat.
Can cause high blood pressure, and increase the risk of stroke, and heart attacks.
Common in obese and older individuals and mostly in men.
Can be treated with surgery to open the airway.
Narcolepsy
A disorder characterized by extreme daytime sleepiness with frequent episodes of nodding off.
Part of the result of genetics.
Terrors
A disruptive sleep disorder, that may involve loud screams and intense panic.
Frequently experiences in childhood.
Occurs in sleep stage N3; may result in bodily harm or property damage.
