SLE Definitions Flashcards
How do you identify a linear equation
It is an algebraic equation in which each term is either a constant or a product of a constant and the first power of a single variable
x + 3 = 4
x - y = 4
Is x2 + 3x + 2 = 0 a linear equation?
No, as x2 is the highest power and equal to 2.
What is a simultaneous linear equation
A set of linear equations of which a solution if it exist statisfies all of them.
Why is x = 1, y = 1 the solution for this pair of equations?
x + y = 2 (1)
2x - y = 1 (2)
Substitiute the values of x and y into the equations
1 + 1 = 2 (1)
2*1 - 1 = 1 (2)
Since the equations match, we say that the values of x =1 and y = 1 satisfy both equations
How many ways are there to solve simultaneous linear equations?
There are 3 ways
By the elimination method
By the substitution methd
By the graphical method
How do you solve using the elimination method
Step 1 Identify the variable to eliminate
Step 2 identify the operation to eliminate the variable
Step 3 Eliminate the chosen variable
Step 4 Find the value of the other variable
Step 5 Substitute the value of this variable in any of the equations
Step 6 Find the value of the other variable
How do solve by the substitution method?
Step 1 Make one of the variables the subject
Step 2 Substitute the above into the other equation
Step 3 Use the above to find the value of the variable
Step 4 Substitute the value of the known variable into the equation found in step 1
Step Find the value of the first varaible
How do you solve by the graphical method
Step 1 Draw the linear graph of both equations
Step 2 Identify the intersection point of the 2 linear graphs
Step 3 The coordinates of the intersection point is the solution
