processes in start bay

A
  • erosion via hydraulic action, waver quarrying, solution and abrasion is most obvious on the south side of start point.
    -the prevailing south westerly winds in start bay lead to LSD in a northward direction.
    -offshore currents cycle material from the North of the bay back to the south showing the CLOSED NATURE OF THE CELL.
    -marine transgression occurred when sea levels rose the water pushed this beach inland.

  • Slapton sands bar is 4km long and has led to a freshwater lagoon.
    -the dancing beggars are a series of stacks to the North of the bay off the small headland at Combe point.
    -small beach at hallsands.
    -old hallsands has a wave cut platform.

  • 5 shingle bastions built in 2014, which were eroded.
    -torcross and beesands both have sea walls protected by rock armour as they are the high value area.
    -250k tonnes of shingle was moved from strete to torcross and then was washed away in one night.
    -road realignment which allows it to be used for another 30 years.
    -rip rap was placed in front of the car park however this didn’t stop erosion in torcross and has needed regular reworking.
  • improve 700m rock revetment at torcross.
