what is slapped cheek syndrome
-also known as fifth disease
-caused by a human infection
how is slapped cheek syndrome transmitted
-contact of airborne droplets from coughing/sneezing or contact with contaminated surfaces
what is the incubation period (how long it takes for someone to experience symptoms after being infected)
4-14 days
how long does it take for the infection to clear up itself
3 weeks
diagnosis/symptoms of slapped cheeky syndrome and duration
prodromal symptoms e.g. fever, sore throat, runny nose. 1-2 days before rash
-rash: bright red rash on cheeks
-rash then becomes spotty bumps and appears on the rest of the body e.g. legs, arms
-usually lasts 1-2 weeks
treatment of slapped cheeky syndrome
-antihistamine
-aqueous calamine cream
-paracetamol for fever
practical measures for slapped cheeky syndrome
-avoid the spread of the virus e.g washing hands, throw away used tissues
-loose cotton clothing
-avoid extra layers
-avoid contact with immunocompromised, pregnant and neonates
