Sky Science Test 2 Flashcards
What are two facts about the Troposphere?
We live here, weather happens here.
What are two facts about the Stratosphere?
The Ozone layer is here, the jet stream is here (east to west)
Two facts about the Mesosphere?
The coldest layer, meators burn up here.
What are two facts about the Thermosphere?
The hottest layer, least amount of air.
One fact about the Ionosphere?
The Northern lights happen here.
One fact about the Exosphere?
Satellites orbit here.
What are three reasons that our planet is the only planet in our solar system that we know that can support life?
- We have a protective atmosphere
- We have breathable air
- Liquid water
- We are the perfect distance from the sun.
What does emit and reflect mean?
Emit means to give off light. Reflect means to reflect off an object that emits.
What object(s) emit light?
Stars.
What objects in space reflect light?
The Moon, planets, I.S.S., comets.
What are the names of the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere?
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere (Ionosphere, Exosphere)
Why is it harmful to look at the sun with the naked eye?
It is harmful because the sun gives off ultra violet rays that can damage your eyes.
What are three safe ways to view the sun?
Welders Mask, Pinhole Camera, Solar glasses.
Why does the sun appear to move across the sun each day?
The sun appears to move across the sky because the Earth makes one full rotation each day.
What causes night and day?
The rotation of the earth causes night and day.
When for the spring and fall equinoxes occur?
The Spring Equinox occurs on March 21st and the Fall Equinox occurs on September 21st.
When do the summer and winter solstices occur?
The Summer Solstice occurs on June 21st and the Winter Solstice occurs on December 21st.
What happens to the amount of daylight on each of these dates?
June 21st- there are more hours of day then night in the Northern Hemisphere. Dec. 21st- there are more hours of night then day in the Northern Hemisphere. Mar.& Sept. 21st there are exactly 12 hours of night and 12 hours of day all around the world.
What causes solstices and equinoxes?
Solstices and Equinoxes are caused because of the Earth’s revolution.
How do the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere compare?
The seasons are exact opposite (ie. when we have winter they have summer, when we have day they have night)
