Skull Radiographic Views & Anatomy Flashcards
1
Q
Types of skull radiographs
A
- occipitomental
- postero-anterior mandible
- true lateral skull
1
Q
What is skull radiographs?
A
- groups of plain radiographs used primarily for assessing maxillofacial trauma
-used to assess disease of skull but replaced by CT now
2
Q
Occipitomental view
A
- for fractures of midface (middle third)
- show facial skeleton, avoiding superimposition of skull base
- can get at different angles
3
Q
Postero-anterior mandible
A
- fractures of posterior mandible, excluding condyles
4
Q
Reverse Towne’s
A
- fractures of mandibular condyles
5
Q
Orbitomeatal line
A
- reference line used in patient positioning for most skull radiographs
- “radiographic baseline”
Landmarks
- outer canthus of eye
- centre of external auditory meatus
6
Q
Indications of OM radiographs
A
- Middle third fractures
- Le Fort 1, 2, 3
- Zygomatic complex
- Naso-ethmoidal complex
- Orbital blow- out - Coronoid process fractures
7
Q
Positioning of OM
A
- face towards receptor
- head tipped back so orbitomeatal line is at 45 degrees to receptor
