skull 2 Flashcards
What is the sphenoid bone?
A keystone bone that articulates with all other cranial bones and spans the width of the middle cranial fossa.
What is the ethmoid bone?
A bone that forms the roof of the nasal cavity and the floor of the anterior cranial fossa.
What is the mandible?
The U-shaped lower jawbone, the largest and strongest bone of the face.
What are the maxillary bones?
They form the upper jaw and central portion of the face, articulating with all facial bones except the mandible.

- Forms the posterior-inferior portion of the nasal septum.
What is the hyoid bone?
A U-shaped bone in the neck that does not articulate with any other bone and serves as an attachment point for tongue and neck muscles.
bones that form the nasal septum
- Perpendicular Plate of the Ethmoid Bone
- Vomer bone
Perpendicular Plate of the Ethmoid Bone
- Forms the superior portion of the nasal septum.
- A thin, flat bone that extends downward from the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone.
What are sutural bones?
Small, irregular bones located within sutures, often in the lambdoid suture.
Which bone contains the foramen magnum, and what structures pass through it?
Bone: Occipital bone.
Structures: Medulla oblongata, vertebral arteries, and spinal roots of the accessory nerve (CN XI).
