Skull Flashcards
What are the 2 parts into which the skull can be divided?
- Neurocranium/cranium: upper part, bowl-shaped, contains brain
- Facial skeleton/ viscerocranium: lower part
What are the 2 parts into which the cranium (neurocranium) can be divided?
cranial vault + cranial base
How many bones does the neurocranium consist of and how many are paired/single?
8 bones (only 2 paired; other 6 single)
How many bones does the viscerocranium consist of and how many are paired/single?
14 bones; only 2 single (12 paired)
What are 4 key types of cavity within the skull and what are their functions?
- Cranial cavity: houes, supports and protects brain
- Nasal cavity: respiration and olfaction
- Orbits: contain eyes and adnexa
- Oral cavity: start of GI tract, responsible for mastication and initial food processing; houses taste receptors
What are the air-filled spaces within the cranial bones called?
paranasal sinuses
Label the 8 bones of the neurocranium on the diagram.
Frontal x1
Parietal x2
Temporal x2
Occipital x1
Ethmoid x1
Sphenoid x1
What are the 14 bones of the viscerocranium?
Nasal x2
Lacrimal x2
Zygomatic x2
Maxilla x2
Palatine x2
Conchae x2
Mandible
Vomer
Label the 6 pairs + 2 unpaired bones of the viscerocranium (facial bones) on the diagram.
2x lacrimal, 2x zygomatic, 2x inferior nasal conchiae, 2x maxilla, 2x nasal, 2x palatine, vomer, mandible
Label the lacrimal bone on the diagram.
Where is the palatine bone?
