What age is ‘Oily’ skin most common with and what causes it?

A

Oily skin is mostly common for people in their teenage years, but can be found on skins of all ages.

It is caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which are controlled by the hormone levels.

What are common characteristics of ‘Oily’ skin?

A

Open pores.
Papules.
Pustules.
Comedones.
Sebaceous glands, producing a greasy shine (sebum).
A build up of dead skin cells which make the skin look coarse in texture.

What skins is ‘Dry’ skin most common with and what causes it?

A

Dry skin is usually associated with mature skins, although it can be found on skins of all ages.

Dry skin is due to the sebaceous glands being under-active and do not produce a sufficient amount of sebum.

The use of harsh facial products may also cause the skin to dry.

Tight pores.
Eyebrow dandruff.
Milia - usually found on skin around the eyes and cheeks.

What are characteristics of ‘Combination’ skin?

A

An oily ‘T-Zone’ which is present on the forehead, nose and chin. Along with this you will see some or all of the following: comedones, papules, pustules, open pores and a greasy shine (usually in the T-Zone area).

The cheeks and neck will either be normal or dry. In these areas you will see the recognised characteristics for that skin type.

What are the characteristics of ‘Mature’ skin?

A

Expression lines appear, particularly around the eye area.
Loss of elasticity.
Facial contours may become slack.
Epidermis becomes thinner.
Broken capillaries appear around the eye area.
Irregular patches of pigmentation form liver spots.
Blood circulation is not as efficient, skin may appear sallow.
Skin may look puffy due to metabolic rate slowing down.
Fatty deposits.
Pores look more enlarged as skin is not as tight.
