Skin Theory Flashcards
What are the 3 main layers of the skin?
1) Epidermis
2) Dermis
3) Subcutaneous
What are the 6 functions of the skin?
1) Protection
2) Sensation
3) Absorption
4) Excretion
5) Regulation
6) Secretion
What are the 5 main layers of Epidermis?
1) Corneum
2) Lucidum
3) Granulosum
4) Spinulosum
5) Germavatum
What are the 3 functions of Sudoriferous Gland?
1) Releases toxins, salt, etc.
2) Cools us down
3) Helps maintain our PH level
Information on The Epidermis
It's the top layer It's made up of dead skin cells The layers... 1) Corneum 2) Lucidum 3) Granulosum 4) Spinosum 5)
What is protection?
Protects our skin from bacteria and infections, and other things that might get in our body.
What is sensation?
Sense of touch or feeling, acts as a “warning system”
What is absorption?
It gets oxygen and nutrients into our body
What is Excretion?
Gets rid of all our toxins etc
What is regulation?
The internal feeling, to hot you’ll sweat, too cold you’ll shiver.
What is secretion?
Release of moisture and oxygen into the skin
The dermis
“True skin”
Connective skin, made up of coligin and elastin, stretchy protein
Subcutaneous layer
Bottom layer, contains fatty tissue, we have this layer because it keeps us warm, to protect organs, vanes, bones and arteries. It contains large nerves.
Corneum layer
Horny layer, because it’s hard. Special cells are keratin protein, it’s made to protect us.
Lucidum Layer
Clear layer, it doesn’t grow hair on the palms of our hands and souls of our feet. Made to protect us
Granulosum layer
Made up of dead skin cells. Made to replace lost skin cells
Spinulosum layer
Special cells are pigmentation special cells? It gives colour to our skin.
Germavatum layer
The basil layer. New living cells, it makes new living cells.
What’s oily skin?
Shiny look, rough texture, mostly young people are prone to acne, caused by over production if sebaceous glands. And improper cleansing
What’s combination skin?
Mixture of oily and dry skin. Most common type. Oily areas are in the “T” zone. And dry skin would be on the other bones on face.
What’s normal skin?
Very rare, fresh, healthy, firm, moist, smooth and no blemishes.
What’s dry skin?
Peeling and flaking, Tight feeling, few blemishes,
What are the signs of infection?
Redness, puss, swollen, pain, throbbing, heat.
What are objective symptoms?
You can see it… rash, pale, and redness.
What is a subjective symptom?
Your feeling it, headache, stomach ache, sore muscles etc.
What is a papule?
Hardened red elevations above the skin, no fluid in them
What is a vesicle?
Fluid filled elevations in the skin caused by localized accumulation of fluids or blood below the epidermis
What is a pustule?
Small elevations of skin similar to vesicles in size and shape, but containing puss.
What is a wheal?
Solid formation above the skin, often caused by an insect bite or allergic reaction
What is a scale?
Shedding of dead cells in the uppermost layer of the epidermis
What is a crust?
Dried masses that are the remains of an oozing does, aka a scab
What is a fissure?
Cracks in the skin, chapped lips
What is a comedones?
Blackheads
What is milia?
Whiteheads
What is acne?
Chronic inflammatory disorder of the subaceous glands
What is rosacea?
Inflammatory of the skin
