Skin Lesion Morphology Terminology Flashcards
Macule:
1) Flat, non-palpable
2) Different colour but not raised or depressed in skin
E.g. viral rashes (measles, rubella), port wine stains
Papule:
1) Palpable, elevated lesion
E.g. Insect bites
Maculopapular:
1) Term loosely used to describes many rashes that are slightly palpable and not entirely flat.
E.g. Most viral rashes
Plaques:
1) Palpable lesions that are elevated or depressed compared to the skin.
2) Larger than papules and may be flat topped or rounded.
E.g. Psoriasis lesions
Nodules:
1) Firm papules/lesions that extend into the epidermis/subcutaneous tissue.
E.g. lipomas
Vesicles:
1) Small, clear, fluid filled blisters
E.g. herpes infections and chickenpox
Bullae:
1) Clear, fluid filled blisters (bigger than vesicles)
e. g. burns, drug reactions
Pustule:
1) Vesicle containing pus (inflammatory cells)
