Skin Infections Flashcards
Red rash, itchy spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters after 12 hours. Blisters will crust over after a week.

Varicella Zoster
(chicken pox)
Pain, followed by a tingling/numb rash that develops into itchy blisters, similar in appearance to chickenpox.

Herpes Zoster (shingles)
Tingling, itching or burning sensation around your mouth. Small fluid-filled sores then appear.

Herpes simplex (cold sores)
Fungal groin infection; itchy iflammation with a visible patch of dry scaly skin

Tinea cruris
(jock itch)
Red sores, quicly burst leaving behind thick, golden (honey) crusts typically around 2cm across.

Impetigo
Cold-like symptoms, with red-brown blotchy rash

Measles / Rubella (rash for 3 days)
Mouth ulcers after one or two days, soon after a rash made up of small, raised red spots on the skin. The spots may then turn into small grey blisters.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease
Small, firm, raised, flesh coloured spots on the skin; thick yellowy-white substance released if spots pop

Molluscum contagiosum
Affects arms and legs; round, red or silvery patch of skin that may be scaly, inflamed, and itchy

Tine corporis (ringworm)
Sore throat, headache, swollen glands; red rash that feels like sandpaper; red cheeks; white or red tongue

Scarlet fever
Swollen salivary glands, fever, headache, joint pain

Mumps
Intense itching, rash with tiny red spots; burrow marks can be seen as wavy, silver-coloured lines on the skin

Scabies
Bright red rash on the cheeks; temperature; sore throat; runny nose; headache

Slapped cheek syndrome
Soles of the feet; white with a black dot in the centre; flat rather than raised

Verrucas
Round or oval shaped; firm and raised

Warts
Rash typically presents as dry flaky skin that may be inflamed and have small red spots. The skin may be cracked and weepy and sometimes thickened.

Eczema
Reddening of the skin with papules and pustules. Chronic inflammatory skin condition common in young, middle-aged adults, and sometimes older people. Only affects face.

Rosacea
Scales are yellowish and greasy looking. Sometimes with inflammation, reddening and crusting of affected skin.

Seborrheic dermatitis
Scales are silvery white and associated with red patchy plaques and inflammation. Common site: scalp, knees, elbows

Psoriasis
