gram positive bacteria methecillin resistant causes skin infections, bone joint and lung infections produces toxins can cause sepsis
what is impetigo?
skin infection caused by staphylococcus aureus
red sores or blisters. They quickly burst and leave crusty, golden-brown patches.
what are different examples of skin infections caused by staphylococcus aureus?
impetigo
ecthyma
abscess
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome
what bacteria is responsible for causing syphilis?
treponema pallidum
spiral shaped
what are the different phases of syphilis and give the symptoms
primary (3-8 weeks)- painless ulcer at inoculation site then it dissapears
secondary (6-12 weeks)- disseminated infection. rash and lymphadenopathy
latent syphilis- no clinical features but they do have syphilis in their body
teriary syphilis - affects mainly the skin, neurological and vascular manifestations
distructive inflammatory regions
very rare
what are the consequences of congenital syphilis?
Miscarriage Still birth Prematurity Rashes Brain and neurological problems Bone disease
what is the virus that causes chicken pox?
Varicella zoster
what are the symptoms of chicken pox
initially:
malaise
fever sore throat
rash, small blisters all over body
most concentrated on face, neck body
can cause unconciousness and pneumonia
what is significant about the second recurrence of herpes zoster
distribution of rash just over one nerve route distribution (dermatome)
lives on in dorsal root ganglion after initial infection
what is an example of a common skin fungal infection
Trichophyton rubrum
what are the signs symptoms of a scabes infection
initally symptomless
after ~4 weeks develop an immune reaction to the mite which loos like eczema
can see a small (~4mm) burrow with a small black head which is the mite
