Skin immunology Flashcards
How to keratinocyte cells aid the immune response?
- Anti microbial peptides
- Pathogen sensing
- Produce cytokines and chemokines
- Dead keratinocytes (corneocytes) make a tight barrier
What is the main resident skin immune cell?
Langerhans cell
In there more T cells in the blood or the skin?
Skin
What are CD4+ cells?
Helper T cells
What do CD4+ cells do?
Activate macrophages to destroy microorganisms. (TH1)
Help B cells to make antibodies (TH2)
What are CD8+ cells?
Cytotoxic T cells
What do CD8+ cells do?
Directly kill infected cells
Where are CD8+ cells mainly found?
The epidermis
Where are both CD8+ and CD4+ cells found?
The dermis
What type of T cells is there an increase in in psoriasis?
TH1, TH17
What type of T cells is there an increase in in atopic dermatitis?
TH2, TH17
What are neutrophils?
Circulating white blood cells which are attracted to tissues by chemokines
What are mast cells?
Effector cells of the IgE mediated response
What causes the release of histamine, TNF and tryptase from mast cells?
Binding of IgE
What is type 1 hypersensitivity?
IgE mediated reaction in which, on second exposure to the antigen, there is rapid degranulation of mast cells
