SKIN - EPIDERMIS Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of skin?
- Epidermis at the top
- Dermis
- Hypodermis - sometimes classified as skin sometimes not
What are the 4 layers of the epidermis ( starting from top down?)
- Stratum corner
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum spinosum / Prickle layer
- Stratum basale / Basal layer
What type of specialised cells are found in the epidermis? (2)
- Keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
- Mostly filled with keratinocytes
Which classification of cells are found in the stratum basale?
- Cuboidal cells at the basal layer
Where is the stratum basale found?
Sat on the basement membrane
Which layer does mitosis occur in?
Stratum basale
How many layers of cells are in the stratum spinosum and what are they connected by?
8-10 layers of cells connected by desmosomes
What proteins does the stratum spinosum produce and what is their use?
Produces cytokeratins which help to form hair and nails
Which classification of cells are found in the spinosum layer?
Columnar
Which classification of cells are found in the stratum granulosum?
Squamous cells
How many layers of cells in stratum granulosum?
3-5 layers
What are the granules in the stratum granulosum packed with?
Keratohyalins
Which layer is keratin found in?
Stratum cornerum
What are the steps of keratin maturation in each layer?
Starting from the bottom:
- Stratum basale - mitosis and some cytokeratin
- Stratum spinosum - cytokeratin
-Stratum granulosum - keratohyalin granules
- Stratum corneum - keratin
What are the 5 layers of epidermis in thick skin?
- Stratum basale
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum corneum
