plateau-like elevation of skin, > 1cm
What is a papule?
palpable, < 1cm
What is a nodule?
palpable, solid, > 1cm
What is a vesicle?
small palpable collection of fluid
What is a pustule?
visible collection of pus, <1cm
What is a bulla?
elevated collection of fluid (clear, serous or haemorrhagic), >1cm
What is an erosion?
superficial area of tissue loss
What is an ulcer?
circumscribed loss of tissue, deeper than erosion
What is the 1st ‘S’?
Site
What is the 2nd ‘S’?
Size
What is the 3rd ‘S’?
Shape -
o linear
o annular, round, oval…
o reticulated (web, lacy)
o serpiginous (slowly progressive,
“creeping”)
What is the 4th ‘S’?
Solitary or not - one lesion or more
What is the 5th ‘S’?
Shade
o erythematous (blanches)
o pigmented, depigmented,
hyperpigmented, hypopigmented
o purpuric (do not blanch); small (5 mm) are
petechiae, larger lesions are purpura.
