Light can pass
Layer 3

Granular cells that are almost dead are pushed to the skins surface to replace cells shed from the stratum corneum
Layer 4
Stratum germinatium
Responsible for the growth of epidermis contains melanin
Melonocytes protect skin from Ultra Violet rays
Layer 5
Dermis
Inner layer of skin called derma
25x thicker than epidermis and is very sensitive
Papillary layer
Contains papillae and sensory nerve fibers and melanin
Reticular layer
Contains fat cells, blood and lymph vessels, sweat and oil glands
Contains hair follicles and arrector pili muscles
Supplies skin with nutrients
Motor nerve fibers
Distributed to arrector pili muscles
Sensory nerve fibers
React to heat, cold, touch, pressure, and pain
Send messages to the brain
Found in papillary layer
Abundant in finger tips
Secretory nerve fibers
Distributed to sweat and oil glands
Regulate excretion of perspiration and control sebum flow to the surface of the skin
Skin color
Depends on blood supply
Dark skin contains more melanin
Light skin contains less melanin
Collagen
Fibrous protein that gives the skin form and strength
