How do topical corticosteroids help with eczema, dermatitis etc?
What are the contra-indications?
Reduces inflammation.
CI in acne, rosacea, can exacerbate skin infections.
State examples of VERY POTENT topical corticosteroid
Clobetasol (Dermovate) 0.0525% w/w
State examples of POTENT topical corticosteroid
Betamethasone 0.1% (Betnovate)
Hydrocortisone Butyrate
Mometasone 0.1%
State examples of MODERTAE topical corticosteroid
Clobetasone (Eumovate)
Betamethasone 0.025% (Betnovate- RD)
State examples of MILD topical corticosteroid
Hydrocortisone < 2.5%
What are the steps and advice to applying a topical steroid?
Apply thinly to affected areas no more than TWICE a day.
Avoid prolonged use: causes thinning of the skin and hypo/hyperpigmentation.
Apply EMOLLIENT FIRST, wait 30 mins, then apply steroid for maximum absorption.
