Skin Flashcards
what are the 4 causes of pressure ulcers
1 - pressure
2- moisture
3- shear
4- friction
What do blood vessels do?
Dilate to loose heat
What is evaporation (in relation to skin)?
Liquid changing to a gas, allowing heat energy to be lost from skin tissues to air
What does the body do when its too hot?
Hair muscles relax
Sweat
Blood flow in capillaries increase
What are the 3 thermoregulatory mechanisms
Insulation
Sweating
Control of blood flow
What do sweat glands do?
Cool temperature
What are the skins 4 main functions?
Sensation
Thermoregulation
Protection
Synthesis of vitamin D
What is convection in relation to skin?
The process of air or water flowing by the skin and carrying away body heat
What does the body do when its too cold?
Hair muscles stand up
Erect hairs trap air
Blood flow in capillaries decrease
What does the adipose tissue do?
Insulates the body
Where is the subcutaneous layer of skin? And what does it do?
Innermost layer of skin
Insulator and regulates body temperature
What is keratinocyte?
Produces keratin and makes skin waterproof
What do thermoreceptors do?
Detect temperature change
Where is the epidermis located? And what is the function?
Outer layer of skin
Provides waterproof barrier, skin tone, sweat glands and hair follicles.
What is conduction in relation to skin?
The transfer of heat energy between skin and an object
