Skin Flashcards
Name the five epidermal layers of the skin
Basale Spinosum Granulosum Lucidum Corneum
Give some features of the stratum basale
Contains stem cells for constant proliferation
Bound to basal lamina by hemidesmosomes
Forms papillae with the dermis
Features of the stratum spinosum
Preparative layer for keratinisation
Features of the stratum granulosum
Contains granules of the precursor to keratin (keratohyalin)
Features of the stratum lucidum
converts precursors to keratin
Features of the stratum corneum
No organelles
Bound by desmosomes
‘Dead layer’
What is psoriasis?
Excess keratin deposition in the skin
Name the two dermal layers of the skin
Papillary layer
Reticular layer
Features of the papillary layer
Protection against pathogens
Control of thermoregulation
Contains nerve endings
Features of the reticular layer
Contains collagen bundles/elastic fibres
How are hair follicles formed in utero?
Epithelial downgrowth followed by invasion if a blood vessel knot
What is the difference between apocrine and eccrine glands?
Apocrine - where follicles are - empty product before the surface
Eccrine - all over the surface - empty directly on the skin
What is the difference between Meissner and Paccinian corpuscles?
Meissner - light touch/fingers
Paccinian - vibration and pressure/pain
