skin Flashcards
what are the layers of the epidermis?
- cornium
- lucidium
- granulosum
- spinosum
- basale
come let’s get sun burnt
what are some features of the basale layer of the epidermis?
- stem cells
- should be the only layer where melanocytes are found
what are some features of the spinosum layer?
- it’s the largest layer
- it contains langerhan cells
- contains merkel cells
what is the purpose of langerhan cells?
-they’re antigen detecting cells and make up part of the immune systme
what is the purpose of merkel cells?
- they synapse with nerves in the dermis of the skin
- they convey fine touch
what are the layers of the dermis?
- more superficial layer of collagen
- deep layer of subcutaneous fat
what is the function of the skin?
- water proof
- create a barrier from infection
what are the most prominent cells in the epidermis? what are there purpose?
keratinocytes - produce keratin forming keratohyaline vesicles as they travel up the become isolated from the blood supply slough off and die
what are present in the dermis?
- eccrine sweat glands
- meissers corpuscle
- pacinian corpuscle
- sabaceous glands
what are the function of messers corpuscles?
sense light touch and are rapidly adapting
what are the function of pacinian corpuscles?
sense vibration and pressure
what are the function of sabaceous glands?
accompany hair follicles producing sebum that lubricates and waterproofs hair cells
what are the function of corneodesmosomes? where are they found?
- found in the corneum layer
- tight junctions that hold cells together
