skin Flashcards
what are the six functions of the skin?
protect, excrete, produce, thermoregulate, store and protect
what does the skin produce as part of its function?
melanin, keratin and vitamin D3
what type of tissue is predominant in the epidermis?
stratified squamous epithelium
what are the five layers of the epidermis?
stratum corneum, stratum lucidum (only found in thick skin), stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum and stratum basale
what are the plexuses of the dermis?
subpapillary and cutaneous
what are the two layers of the dermis?
papillary and reticular
which type of cell dominates the hypodermis?
adipocytes
which layers of the skin does a third-degree burn affect?
epidermis, dermis and hypodermis
which burn type leads to moist, red and blistered skin?
normal second-degree burns
why are third-degree burns not painful?
becuase the sensory nerve endings have been destroyed
what are the two types of sweat glands?
eccrine and apocrine
where are apocrine sweat glands found?
specific areas e.g. armpit, groin and around the nipples
what are the two functions of the nails?
protect fingertips/toes and enhance sensation
what is the function of the arrector pili muscle?
to improve insulation
what is vitamin D essential for?
normal calcium metabolism and strong bones
which type of skin cancer is common but relatively benign?
basal cell carcinoma
where does malignant melanoma originate?
melanocytes
what are the four problems that skin aging causes?
slower skin repair, drier epidermis (less sebum), impaired cooling (less sweat) and less pigmentation
how is melanin transferred from the melanocytes to epidermal cells?
melanosomes
what causes freckles?
melanocytes overproducing melanosomes
what are the five types of receptors in the skin?
free nerve endings, tactile discs, tactile corpuscles, lamellar corpuscles and bulbous corpuscles
which receptor in the skin would be used when reading braille text?
tactile corpuscles
where are tactile discs located in the skin?
deepest layer of epidermis
what are the three things that free nerve endings respond to?
pain, movement and pressure, and temperature
