Skills definitions Flashcards
Gross Skill
Large muscle groups e.g shoulders in rugby tackle as well as use of legs
Fine Skill
Smaller more intricate muscle groups e.g table tennis shot (small precise movements)
Open skill
Sporting environment is unpredictable and changes frequently meaning player has to think whilst playing the sport e.g football
Closed Skill
Sporting environment is predictable meaning player can repeat actions and has less decisions to make e.g javelin
Self paced
performer controls speed in which the skill is performed and have some control over when to start e.g. penalty in football
Externally paced
performer has no control over when to start the skill or how fast it might be performed e.g runner must start when the gun goes
discrete
clear beginning and end. one short sharp action. e.g tennis serve in which the player does quickly and stops after
Serial
Several discrete skills linked up in a chain in order to make a more integrated movement e.g trampoline routine such as pike, seat drop, somersault.
Continuous
No clear beginning and end often the end of one part is the start of another e.g. cycling peddling can be repeated constantly until the task is completed
Simple
Requires few decisions
Complex
Requires decision making and lots of information needed before the performer can attempt the skill e.g dribble in hockey
High-organised skill
Not easily broken down into parts e.g volley in football the action is very quick and the sub routines merge quickly
Low organisation
easily broken down into parts e.g swimming stroke because arm movement, leg movement and body positioning can be easily identified and practised separately
