Environmental continuum
Open and Closed
Open Skill
A skill affected by the environment.
Eg - a tackle in rugby
Closed Skill
A skill not affected by the environment
Eg - a forward roll in gymnastics
Muscular continuum
Gross and Fine
Gross skill
A skill that uses large muscle movements
Eg - a weightlifter
Fine Skill
A skill that uses small muscle movements - precise movements
eg - release of an arrow in archery
Pacing Continuum
Self and External
Self Paced Skill
A skill where the performer is in control of the rate of the action
eg - a cartwheel in gymnastics (not in routine!)
Externally Paced Skills
A skill which the performer is not in control of the rate of the action - they are reactive
Eg - a goalkeeper saving a shot in football
Organisational continuum
High and Low (4 and 3)
High (4 letters) Organised Skills
Skills that can’t (4 letters) be broken into subroutines
eg - a cartwheel
Low (3 letters) organised skills
Skills that can (3 letters) be broken easily into subroutines
eg - a triple jump
Continuity continuum
The only one with 3!! Discrete - Serial - Continuous
Discrete Skill
A skill with a clear beginning and end
eg - a free throw in basketball
Serial Skill
A skill containing multiple discrete skills added together
eg - a triple jump or a gymnastics routine
