Skill Acquisition Flashcards
Continuous skills
Do not have a clear beginning and end, repetitive and ongoing.
Serial skills
Several discrete elements that are then performed in a pattern or sequence.
Discrete skills
Have a clear beginning and end, can be repeated but performer has to start again from the beginning.
Fine skills
Involve intricate movements using small muscle groups. The movement is precise and requires hand-eye coordination and control.
Gross skills
Involve large muscle groups and require more movement to produce power.
Open skills
Affected by the environment and involve a lot of perception and decision making as movements have to be adapted to the changing environment.
Closed skills
Not affected by the environment and is a set routine.
Externally paced skills
The rate of the skill is controlled by the environment and involves a reaction.
Self paced skills
The rate of the skill is determined by the performer.
High organization skills
The sub-routines are closely linked and difficult to seperate.
Low organization skills
The sub-routines can be easily seperated and practised.
Complex skills
Requires a lot of decisions and has high perceptual load on the performer.
Simple skills
Low perceptual load and minimal decisions to be made.
What skills should whole practice be used for?
Closed, discrete, simple, highly organised
What are the advantages of whole practice?
Fluency, understanding, keep links between subroutines, build image, develops motor programmes.
What are the disadvantages of whole practice?
Too much info, not for beginners
What skills should part practice be used for?
Low organized, complex
