Skill Acquisition Flashcards
What is a skill?
A learned ability to bring about a predetermined results with the minimum outlayof time, energy or both.
What is an open skill?
Environment is unpredictable
Predominantly perceptual movement
Often quick decisions/adjustments/variations of skills are needed
What is a closed skill?
Predictable environment
Able to repeat actions consistently
Pred-rehearsed, habitusl routine
Fewer decisions to make
AO2 Example of open skill
Pass in a team game
AO2 Example of closed skill
Shot putt
What is a Gross skill?
Involves large muscle groups
Large movements
Normally associated with strength, endurance and power movements
What is a Fine skill?
Involves smaller, more intricate muscle groups
Smaller, finer movements
Normally associated with speed, efficiency and accuracy of movemnt
Fewer decisions to make
AO2 Example of Gross skill
Rugby tackle
AO2 Example of Fine skill
Returning a shot in table tennis
What is a self-paced skill?
Performer controls the speed at which the skill is performed
Performer has control of when to start movement
Involves pro-action
More closed skills
What an Externally paced skill?
Action is determined by external environment/source
Performer has no control over start/ speed of movemnet
More reactive
More open skills
AO2 Example of Self-paced skill
Penalty kick in football
AO2 Example of Externally paced skill
Returning a pass in hockey
What is a Discrete skill?
Clear, well defined beginning and end
Usually short, quick, songle action
If repeated, must start again at beginning
What is a Serial skill?
A number of discrete skills put together to form a sequence
Order in which skills are put together is crucial
Each movement is both stimulus and response
