Q

Explain how different types of cells form different types of tissues.

A

Within multicellular organisms, cells of the same type are usually organised into groups or layers to form functional units called tissues. For example, muscle cells are organised into muscle tissues which can contract and cause movements. Nerve tissues are formed from nerve cells. Epithelial cells in animals, such as those on the skin or lining of the cheek or stomach, are organised into epithelial tissues which form coverings to protect the structures beneath them. Some tissues are made up of different types of cells. Connective tissue, for example, joins all parts of an organism and is made up of different types of cells such as blood cells, fat cells, cartilage cells and bone cells.

Q

Explain how the plant tissues work.

A

Like animal cells, plant cells are organised into tissues to perform different functions. The epidermal cells of a plant are organised into dermal tissues which form the outermost layer of the plant and protect it from getting injured and drying out. The vascular tissues are made up of the xylem which transports water and mineral salts, and the phloem, which transports food made by the plant. Ground tissues form the bulk of the tissue of a plant and their functions include photosynthesis, physical support and food storage.

Q

What is a cross section?

A

In general, cross sections are a way of looking at something in biology. That is, something, like a plant, is chopped up at a specific axis or angle and the scientists can see the different cells, organs, and tissue inside of the organism. This allows them to observe different organisms and learn more about them. Sometimes, cross sections can be microscopic, while at other times, it can be seen by the naked eye.

Q

What are organs and how are they related to tissues?

A

Different tissues may be grouped together to form an organ, which is responsible for carrying out one or more main functions. The brain, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines, stomach and skin are examples of human organs. Organs are made up of specialised tissues and connective tissues.
