Skeleton Structure Flashcards
How many bones does the skeleton have?
The skeleton has 206 bones
What are the three different skeleton functions?
Structure
Movement
Protection
S. M. P
What does structure do?
Gives shape
What is movement?
When major muscles attach to bones
Why do we need protection
To protect our internal organs with bones
What is the heart, lungs, brain, spinal chord and Reproductive organs protected by?
Heart=ribs Lungs=ribs Brain=Cranium (skull) Spinal chord=spine Reproductive Organs=pelvis (hip)
What’s the pivot joint do?
Rotates 360’
Example=neck
The neck doesn’t rotate 360’ because the muscles get on the way
What do fixed joints do?
Can’t move or grow bigger or smaller, stuck between bone
Example=skull
What does a ball and socket joint do?
Rotates 360’, allows flexibility, covered in cartilage, synovial fluid inbetween
What do hinge joints do?
Rotates 180’, contracts and relaxes,ends are covered in cartilage and between is synovial fluid
Example=elbow
Types of muscles
Muscles can work in antagonistic pairs
Skeletal muscles
Cardiac muscles
Smooth muscles
What is synovial fluid and what does it do?
Synovial fluid is a substance that is on synovial joints and it goes with cartilage to reduce friction reducing arthritis
What are skeletal muscles?
Skeletal muscles are attached to your bones and cover your body to give it its shape
What are smooth muscles?
Smooth muscles are found in organs like your intestine and form a wall which is used to contract and push food
What are cardiac muscles?
Cardiac muscles are found in your heart and cardiac muscles contract to squeeze out blood and relax to fill up with blood
