skeleton Flashcards
What is the skeletal system composed of
Cartiladge, bones and ligaments
cartilage
-shock absorption,smooth joint movements
What are ligaments
connection between the bones
Attaches bone tobone
constrains skeletal motion
What are tendons
connection between bones and muscle: connect bone to muscle
transfers muscle force to bone… generates motion
What are the lateral ligaments
Posterior talofibular ligament
anterior talofibular ligament
calcaneofibular ligament
Where is cartiladge found
ears
nose
articular cartiladge (between joints like knee)
costal cartilage (true ribs)
pubic symphysis
articular disk
What are chondrocytes
cartlidage cells
what are lacuna
space CONTAINING chondrocytes
is cartilage elastic
yes it is, it returns to its original state once compressed
cartiladge is a connective tissue?
Yes with extensive extracellular matric
NO nervous inervation or blood vessels
in cartiladge
What are the three types of cartilage
1) Hyaline
2) elastic
3) fibrocartilage
Hyaline cartilage
-flexible and resistant
-articular cartiladge
costal cartilage
respiratory cartligae
what two types of respiratory carilage
thyroid carlitage
cricoid cartilage
Elastic cartilage
found in epiglottis and outter (external ) ear
Fibrocartilage
-resists compression and tension
cartilage in intervertebral discs (annulus fibrousus) and meniscus (padlike cartilage in knee joint) and pubis symphisis
what is the annulus fibrouses
part of the intervertebral disc
what is the difference between the verterbal foramen and the intervertrebral foramen
Vertebral: passage for the spinal cord
intervertrab: for the nerves exiting the spinal cord
