[Skeletal System] Skeletal Tissues: Bone structure & Histology Flashcards
2 parts of gross structure of long bones
Diaphysis & Epiphysis
“Gross structure” meaning
Indicates no microscope; just what we can see
Diaphysis
Shaft of long bones
Epiphysis
Ends of long bones
-Filled w/ spongy bone & red marrow that makes RBC
Hyaline Cartilage covers ends of _______________
…long bones and joints
Periosteum
A sheath of connective tissue that lines the outside of bone
Endosteum
Membrane lining inner part of the bone
Medullary Cavity
The hollow area where yellow marrow is (red marrow for kids)
Epiphyseal line/Growth plate
-Solid in adults
-Made of hyaline cartilage & allows long bones to get longer (kids)
Long bones are the only types of bones that have ______________.
a center medullary cavity
Most bones just have 2 layers, which are:
-Outer layer = compact bone
-Interior = spongy bone (filled w/ red marrow)
Bone types:
Compact bone & Cancellous/spongy
Compact bone
-Hard, strong, solid bone that forms outer layer of all bone
-Provides support, protection, and resists stress
-Primary support of all bone & contains osteons
Cancellous/spongy bone
-Typically found at ends of long bone
-Typically fills entire interior of flat bones & vertebrae
-Open lattice (work of struts & plates that serves to store bone marrow
(Cancellous/spongy bone) Trabeculae
Act as network of supporting beams to provide strength/support to bones
