Skeletal System Overview Flashcards
Long Bones
Explain why bone is considered an organ.
Because they have several different tissue types.
How many bones are in an average adult human body?
206
Compact bone
dense, smooth, outer layer of bones. Has lots of pores
Spongy bone
less compact (inside layer of compact bone). Has honeycomb structure, helps bones resist stress. (Its lighter/less dense)
Diaphysis
compact bone that forms the shaft of the bone. Medullary cavity runs through the center.
Yellow bone marrow
created of fat and stem cells
Epiphysis
ends of bones, outer is compact, interior is spongy.
Red bone marrow
red bone marrow creates BLOOD CELLS.
Epiphyseal plate
between the epiphysis and diaphysis. Layer of hyaline cartilage where growth occurs to lengthen bone.
Medullary cavity
runs through the center of diaphysis. Hallow part of the bone that contains bone marrow.
Endosteum
lines spaces in spongy bone and medullary cavity.
Periosteum
covers the entire bone except joining surfaces.
Articular cartilage
covers joint surfaces.
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disease showing a decrease in bone mass due to the rate of bone resorption exceeding the rate of bone formation.
