Skeletal system & joints Flashcards
What is the origin?
The end of the muscle fixed to the stationary bone.
What is the insertion?
Theattachment to the movable bone of the other end of the muscle.
A muscle that causes a desired action is called?
The agonist or prime mover.
What are the associated structures of the skeletal system?
Tendons, ligaments & joints.
What are the 5 main functions of the skeletal system?
- It provides a scaffold to support the weight of the rest of the body.
- It facilitates movement by being points of attachment for muscles.
- It protects vital organs.
- It produces red blood cells.
- It stores and releases mineral salts and fats, like calcium, phosphorus, sodium & potassium.
What is the function of;
1. Flat bone
2. Irregular bone
3. Long bone
4. Sesamoid bone
5. Short bone
- Protects internal organs
- Variable structure helps protect different structures
- Supports weight and allows movement
- Protects tendons
- Provide stability and some movement
