Skeletal System Functions Flashcards
What are the six functions of bones?
- Support
- Shape/Structure
- Protection
- Movement
- Mineral Storage
- Production of Blood Cells
What is the primary role of the cranium?
Protects the soft tissue of the brain.
How do vertebrae contribute to movement?
Allow us to bend, stretch, and rotate our body.
Where are red blood cells produced in the body?
In the ribs and limb bones.
What happens to bone marrow as we age?
It is replaced by stored fat.
What is the role of the rib cage?
Protects the delicate heart and lungs.
What is the function of tendons?
Attach muscle to bone to provide leverage.
What do ligaments connect?
Bone to bone.
What is the main function of synovial joints?
Allow for freely movable joint action.
What are the three classifications of joints?
- Synovial (Freely Moveable)
- Cartilaginous (Slightly Moveable)
- Fibrous (Fixed)
What characterizes a cartilaginous joint?
Allows slight movement and is covered in cartilage.
What is an example of a fibrous joint?
The joints between the plates in the cranium.
List the six types of synovial joints.
- Ball & Socket Joint
- Hinge Joint
- Pivot Joint
- Gliding Joint
- Saddle Joint
- Condyloid Joint
What movements do hinge joints allow?
Movement in one direction only (Extension and Flexion).
What characterizes a ball and socket joint?
Allows movement in any direction.
