Skeletal System Flashcards
Articulation
A place where two or more bones meet to connect parts and allow for movement in the body.
Axial Skeleton
The Axis of the body; the axial skeleton consist of the head, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum.
Trabeculae
An irregular meshing of small, bony plates that makes up spongy bone; it’s spaces are filled with red marrow.
Endosteum
A thin membrane of connective tissue that lines the marrow cavity of a bone.
Periosteum
The thin membrane of connective tissue that covers bones, except at articulations.
Spongy (cancellous) bone
The lighter- weight portion of the bone, which is made up of trabeculae.
Sesamoid bones
Round bones that often are embedded in tendons are joint capsules. The largest of these is the Patella.
Compact (dense) bone
The hard portion of the bone that surrounds spongy bone and helps provide the firm framework of the body.
Hinge joint
Joint that allows flexion and extension in one plane, changing the angle of the bones at the joint, like a door hinge.
Synovial fluid
A thick, colorless, lubricating fluid secreted by the joint cavity membrane.
Appendicular Skeleton
Is a composed of the limbs (appendages) of the body and their attachments.
Articular Cartilage
Is a though, flexible connective tissue with high water content, so it is softer than bone.
Skeletal System functions
Besides the obvious function of support and motion, bones have other important roles.
Scoliosis
Curveture of the spine S shape. Any where in the vertebrae.
Lordosis
Curveture of spine in Lumbar (lover) vertebrae.
