Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the five functions of the human skeletal system?
Protect (Ex. Rib cage protects lungs)
Support (Ex. Spine keeps us standing straight)
Stores Calcium and Phosphorous,
Creates red blood cells
Movement (Ex. Bicep and tricep working together to move.
What structure attaches muscle to bone?
Tendons
Where are red blood cells produced?
Red marrow
What two minerals are stored in bones and where are they released when needed?
Calcium and Phosphorous & are released into the blood stream
What are joints?
Where bones come together
What structure connect bones to bones and hold them together at joints?
Ligaments
Bones that meet at joints are cushioned and lubricated. What substance cushions them and what is the substance that lubricates them?
Cartilage cushions &
Synovial fluid lubricates
Where are these four parts of a normal bone located and what is their function?
Outer Membrane- Realeasing red blood cells into the rest of the body.
Compact bone- Helps protect organs and support the body
Spongy bone- Helps bone growth
Marrow- Red marrow creates red and white blood cells and the yellow marrow stores fat/storing energy
What are the two types of bone marrow and what does each do?
Red bone marrow- Creates red and white blood cells
Yellow bone marrow- Stores fat as energy
Bone health depends on the buildup and breakdown of bone. Describe what is happening to both the buildup and breakdown of bone when these are occurring.
Growth: Bones are still developing and getting larger/gaining more cells then you are losing
Maintain: Losing the same amount of cells as you are gaining
Bone loss: Losing more cells then you are gaining
