Skeletal system Flashcards
What is Kyphosis
Kyphosis is when there is an excessive curvature in the thoracic region of the spine and is known for the name “hunchback” The causes for this are usually linked to bad posture but can also be due to deformities the vertebrae
what is Scoliosis
Scoliosis is when there is an abnormal curvature in the thoracic region of the spine. It typically occurs in childhood but can also be found in adulthood and it is where the spine either bends left to right. The causes for this are not due to bad posture and it is unknown. However, it is inheritable
What are your bones
Your bones are a living organ and are constantly being reshaped through a process called remodelling.
What is ossification
The process in which bones are formed
Explain the process of ossification
Throughout this process your bones are being reformed and any unnecessary calcium is removed via osteoblasts and new layers of bone tissue is created
One function of the skeletal system is protection. Give an example of this
Your rib cage protecting your heart and lungs and your cranium protecting your brain
What does it mean when one of the functions of the skeletal system is Attachment for skeletal system?
This is to do with your tendons, bones and muscles. Your tendons attach your muscle to bone and muscles pull on the bone to create ovement
what is leverage?
Leverage is when long bones create a lever system against which muscles can pull to create movement
What minerals does the body store
The body stores minerals such as calcium and phosphorous which is essential for bone growth and maintenance of bone health
What does it mean when the skeletal system provides support?
bones give our body framework allowing us to stand up straight and attach muscles.
Where is the cells produced in the body and what do they do?
Bone marrow in our bones produces blood cells such as red an white. Red blood cells produce oxygen needed for energy and white blood cells which fight against infection
What is weight bearing
Your bones are very strong and will support the weight of your body. The primary bones that do this are the tarsals and the pelvis
How does the body reduce friction across joints
Synovial joints secrete synovial fluid which lubricates the joint reducing friction at it
What are the three classifications of joints
Fixed, slightly movable, synovial
What is an example of a fixed joint
Cranium, sacrum coccygeal
