skeletal system Flashcards
what are the 5 functions of the skeleton ?
- support
- protection
- movement
- blood production
- storage
what is the difference between avian and mammalian bones ?
avian bones consist of air pockets and a honeycomb structure where as animal / mammal bones consist of bone and bone marrow.
what is the function of flat bones ?
to protect internal organs such as the brain, heart and pelvic organs.
how are flat bones structured ?
flattened , like a shield ( protects ) and provide large areas for attachment of muscles.
what is the function of long bones ?
to support the weight of the body and facilitate movement.
how are long bones structured ?
they are longer then they are wide. they can be relatively small bones such as phalanges (fingers)
what is the function of short bones ?
Provide stability and some movement
what is the structure of short bones
cube like shaped and found mostly in the wrists and ankles.
what is the function of irregular bones?
as they are found in the vertebral column , they protect the spinal cord.
what is the function of sesamoid bones
protect tendons from stress and wear.
what is the function of cartilage ?
maintains joint motion and acts as a shock barrier.
what is the function of ligaments ?
connects the bones of the body together
what is the function of joints?
the point at which bones meet allowing for movement
what is the function of tendons ?
attaches muscle to bone to enable movement
what is the function of muscle ?
produce force and motion
