skeletal system Flashcards
what are the different purposes of the skeleton
- provides support for the muscles
- it enables gross movement
- it protects vital organs
- it maintains our body shape/gives us shape
- it produces red blood cells
- and it asks as a mineral storage
where are red blood cells created
in the bones, specifically the bone marrow
what other minerals do the bones store
calcium, phosphorus
what are the features of a synovial joint
muscles, tendons, bursae, cartilage, synovial fluid, joint capsule, synovial membrane, ligament
what is the skull known as
cranium
what is the collar bone known as
clavicle
what is are the bones the protect the lungs known as
rib cage
what is our shoulder blade known as
scapular
what is the bones that connects to our shoulder known as
humerus
what are the bones in our forearm known as
ulna and radius
what are the bones that connect to our radius known as
carpus
what is connected to the carpus
metacarpus
what is connected to the metacarpus
phalanges
what is bone is at the centre of our rib cage
sternum
what is our spinal cord known as
vertebral column
what does the spinal cord link to (hip born)
pelvis
what bone is connected to the pelvis, but isn’t the spinal cord
sacrum
what bones are connected bellow the hip bone
femur
what is the knee cap known as
patella
what is connected the the thigh bone
tibia
excluding the tibia, what other bone is in our shin area
fibula
what is connected to the bottom of the tibia
talus
what bones are connected to the bottom of the talus
tarsals
what bones are connected to the bottom of the tarsals
metatarsals
what bones are connected to the bottom of the metatarsals
phalanges
what are the three different joints
- ball and socket
- hinge joint
- synovial joint
what are the 4 types of bones and what are their functions
- long bones - support, enables gross movement
- short bones - enable finer, more controlled movements. act as shock absorbers
- flat bones - provide a large surface for muscles to attach to, protect vital organs
- irregular - provides shape and protection
what is the purpose of gross movement
to generate speed and power
give an example of long bones
humerus, radias, femur (anything that is longer than it is wide)
give an example of short bones
tarsals, carpuls, talus (anything that is wider than it is long)
give examples of flat bones
sternum, pelvis, cranium, scapular
give examples of irregular bones
patella, vertebral column
