Skeletal Muscle Anatomy Flashcards
myology
study of the muscles
3 types of muscle tissue
cardiac, smooth and skeletal
cardiac muscle location and function
in the heart
has striations
involuntary
pumps blood
able to regenerate sometimes
smooth muscle
no striations
involuntary
locations: inside hollow organs, lungs, blood vessels, and stomach
function: depends on what organ it is in.
general characteristics
40 to 50 percent of total body weight
5 functions
1) produce heat by contractions
2) produces movement
3) regulates organ volume
4) stabilizes body positions
5) moves substances through to body
skeletal muscle tissue
connective tissue
each skeletal muscle is an organ composed of hundreds to thousands of muscle fibers
vascular with nerve supply
require large amounts of ATP
Connective tissue surrounds the muscle fiber and the entire muscle
fascia
sheet of CT found beneath the skin and around muscles and organs
Superficial- right under the skin (areolar and adipose CT)
Deep- holds muscles together, separates into functional groups (bundles) (dense irregular connective tissue)
epimysium
covers entire muscle cell
perimysium
surrounds bundles of 10 to 100 muscle fibers called fascicles
endomysium
wraps around each indiuval muscle fiber
tendon
bone to bone
collagen fibers, cord of dense regular connective tissue
muscle histology
muscle fibers- 100 to 1000 making up skeletal muscles
- arranged parallel to each other
sarcolemma
plasma membrane around each muscle fiber
transverse (t) tubules
tunnel-like extensions of sarcolemma that pass through muscle fibers from side to side
