skeletal muscle Flashcards
are skeletal muscles striated or non-striated?
skeletal muscles can be either striated or non-striated but are usually striated
where is the nucleus located in skeletal muscle cells?
peripherally (to the side)
are skeletal muscles mulnucleated
yes!
what are skeletal muscles?
muscles that are usually attached to bones directly or by tendons or attached to fascia
are skeletal muscles voluntary or involuntary?
skeletal muscles are mostly voluntary (apart from reflex actions)
what gives the banding pattern seen in histology?
band of actin and myosin
by what proportion are the muscle cells stimulated to shorten by attaching nerve cells?
1/3 of their own length
how do muscles connect to the bones?
some by tendons which attach to the periosteum and some by fishy muscle fibres which attach directly to the bones.
what is the role of deep fascia?
deep fascia divide the limb muscles into functional groups.
what are the components of a functional group of muscles?
the prime mover - main contractile element; synergists accompany the prime mover but are not the main source of contraction; antagonists are the group of muscles that oppose the movement, and make sur the movement is controlled and also return the limb to it’s original position.
what are muscle fibres composed of?
muscle fibres (myocytes) are multiple muscle cells joined to form a long, multinucleate fibre.
myosatellite cells
cells which divide to form myoblasts which later mature into myocytes (the long muscle fibres)
myostatin
signalling molecule that inhibits the process of differentiation in muscle cells
