Name the different types of names for cocked striker
Cocked detonator Cocked firing pin Firing pin under spring tension Hung striker Hung detonator Hung firing pin
What is a pistol
A mechanism containing a heavy firing pin or striker but no explosive components
What is the definition of an armed fuse or pistol
a fuse is armed when all the safety devices and features incorporated in the fuse have been eliminated or are not functioning so that the fuse has completed it’s arming sequence but has not been subjected to sufficient or proper force is required to begin the fuse firing sequence
What is the definition of boresafe
Term referring to a fuse not capable of detonating the projectile until it leaves the bore of the weapon
Name the components of a projectile
Fuse Ogive Bourrelet Body Driving band Base plate
Categories of a projectile
HE Carrier Shot Prac Dummy/drill
Types of HE projectiles
Frag/Blast
HEAT
HESH
AP/SAP
Name some ID features of a HE Frag Projectile
A pointed or ogival nose
A low charge to weight ratio
Squared or tapered base
Driving band placed near the base of projo
Base plate screwed or welded
Generally of one piece construction
A fuse which can be located in the nose or base
He mortars are generally tear drop in shape
May have a rocket assist or base bleed
List some of the ID features for a HEAT Projo
- Ogival nose conical sometimes probe shade nose is designed to provide ballistic standoff.
- Either a fixed or slipping driving band or fins which may be fixed or hinged to the base.
- The projectile body is parallel-sided and made of two pieces joined near the ogive
- They may be fused in the nose the base or both most likely pibd
- If no driving band is present the projectile may have two bourellets
- Low charge to weight ratio
What are the three methods a carrier projectile May dispense their payload
- Ejection
- Bursting
- Emission
List the types of payloads a carrier projectile may have
Flechette Smoked mixtures and white phosphorus Flares or illuminants Incendiaries Chemical agent Propaganda Radio echo chaff Radio jamming transmitters Submunitions
List of some of the ID features for a carrier projectile
- Ogival streamlined nose
- Nose/time fused
- Parallel sides
- Square or tapered base
- One or two piece body construction
- Base plate held in place by weekend PVC ring or shear pins for base ejection
- Copper driving band may be fitted
- Base plate or nose ejected if the munition has functioned
What are two types of impact fuses
Point detonating
Base detonating
What are three means of initiation for Projectile and rocket fuses
Impact
Time
Proximity
What identifying features does a PD fuse have
Single piece construction
Plunger or crushable nose shield
May have SQ/Delay selector
What identifiable features does a BD fuse have
- Generally internal to EO
- Most are flush with the projectile base however some May protrude a considerable distance
- nomenclature is usually marked or stamped on the fuse base where it is visible after fuse has been installed
- Tracer elements may be installed in many BD fuses they may be pressed in or “screwed in” type
- Spanner holes or wrench flats
What are the two types of pibd fuse
Electrical
Mechanical
What are the three main types of time fuses
Powder train time fuse
Electronic time
Mechanical time
