Six Fundamental Principles Flashcards
Love only is always good
.Love is the one intrinsic good and the only regulative principle of Christian ethics.
.Love is only a predicate, not objectively real
.We must act so that more good will occur than with any possible alternatives
Love is the only norm
Love replaces law but employs it where it seems worthwhile, love can break any/all of the Ten Commandments.
Love and justice are the same
.Love and justice has to be United because justice is nothing more than love working out its problems
.SE + Utilitarianism should form a coalition with the utilitarian goal of happiness and pleasure being replaced by agape and Bentham‘s pleasure calculation should be replaced by the agapeic calculus.
Love and liking are not the same
. Love is not sentimental or emotional but cognitive you should wear yourself to promote other peoples well-being.
.Love needs calculation it is right to deal lovingly with enemy.
Love justifies its means
.Fletcher argued that if the end does not justify the means what does? Nothing.
.We need to consider four factors when judging situation; the end, mean, motive and consequences.
.The moral responsibility of love is no light thing.
Love decides there and then (situationally)
.People want the crutch of an ethical system to lean on - cowering behind the security of rules – we must accept that morality has grey areas that we must deal with
. Jesus was a situationist
