Situational Questions Flashcards
You receive a phone call at 0200 on Saturday morning/Friday night. It is one of your Soldiers who says that he has been out drinking and needs a ride home. How do you respond
- Are you okay?
- Any friends with you and are they okay?
3.Location
4.Pick them up and stress the importance of not drinking and driving
5.Drop them off home safely - Prepare an event oriented counseling, talking about better decision making and creating a plan before going out, if the soldier is under 21, take appropriate actions and refer them
7.Let the soldier know they did the right thing by notifying me and encourage them to continue doing the right thing
8.Serve them the documentation in case the soldier were to develop a pattern or for any future incidents
Did you check your Soldiers’ rooms today? Why is it important to check your Soldiers’ rooms
- Yes or No
- It’s important so you can inspect your soldiers
3.Accountability
4.How is he doing/do they look okay
5.And to learn their behavior or patterns to identify changes in behavior - Lastly to ensure they are following the barracks SOP
One of your Soldiers just failed an ACFT. Describe the steps you would take beginning after the failure
1.Counseling/Explaining what that means for the soldier like flags, possible separation and career limitations
2.Find out why we failed, whether it’s a diet issue, injury, illness or home problem and come up with a plan to fix it
3.Make sure he’s following the plan and motivate him on following and sticking to the plan so we can see improvements
4.Determine if the soldier still wants to be in the army or is trying to be better, if the soldier isn’t motivated and doesn’t want to get better I will personally initiate separation, I have identified a lack of motivation and i’d like to make sure the people I work with who I have to trust with my life can perform or show interest in performing and getting to a point where they can meet the basic physical standards. if they won’t try then and admit to not wanting to try for my wellbeing and for those around me I think the best option is to initiate separation.
You’re standing in line in uniform at a restaurant for lunch when someone approaches you and asks, “Aren’t you glad that clown Trump is out of office?” How would you respond
- I swore an oath to protect the constitution and defend the people of the united states regardless of who president
- the reason for that answer is because i’m in uniform and can’t be seen promoting or talking down on any political interests no matter by beliefs when im in uniform because it may be construed as the beliefs of all soldiers
What was the last book you read professionally
The 10th edition of the NCO guide, im still learning as I read but some of the things I have learned so far is where NCOs get their knowledge. I look at current NCOs and wonder how they know so much and through reading i’ve learned it’s not just what i’m taught or what I read but it’s also practical experience such as live fires or ranges where NCOs get the opportunity to learn more about being an NCO. There are 3 areas where NCOs learn to develop their skills and they are operational, institutions and self taught development. i’ve been self teaching myself in practice for the board but I can always learn more from schools like air assault and EIB but I can learn from practical/operational experience like being in the field as an NCO
Suppose you have a Soldier who refuses to get the COVID-19 vaccine. How would you handle this situation?
- Listen to my soldiers concerns about the vaccine, it may be a medical reasoning for why he is worried or maybe he’s read up on it and doesn’t know what to believe
2.If the soldier is worried about the safety I will talk to them about all info they can find online regarding the vaccine and its benefits and we could schedule an appointment with the PA to discuss any concerns - If my soldier believes it’s a tracking device or something i’d tell them they have a phone on them at all times so if he was truly worried about it being a tracking device then he wouldn’t mind getting rid of his phone
4.I would encourage he gets the vaccine for the safety of his team, if he gets sick then we could get sick and losing soldiers for something preventable isn’t something we could afford
5.If he still decides not to then that is his right but I would like it to be an informed decision
You notice that one of your Soldiers has not been acting themselves recently and open a conversation. In the course of the conversation, the Soldier mentions that they are thinking about harming yourself. Describe your next steps.
- Utilize the army’s ACE framework which is Ask, Care, Escort
2.I would ask what is the problem and do they have a plan to harm themselves already in place, I would mentally note it down if they do and take steps from there, if they don’t id continue
3.Id let them know I care, not just because the army says I should but because humans have intrinsic value and suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, i would build on the trust we have to resolve the situation - Lastly id escort my soldier to the proper resources and inform my higher leadership of the situation, if its during the work day id encourage the soldier to go to BH, if it isn’t during the work day i’d escort the soldier to our nearest 24/7 BH facilities
Describe and define counterproductive/toxic leadership
Toxic leadership is the demonstration of leader behaviors that violate one or more of the Army’s core leader competencies or Army Values, preventing a climate conducive to mission accomplishment. Toxic leadership is described as incompetence as well as abusive, erratic, corrupt, and self-serving behaviors.
Specific examples:

belittling individuals, condescending or talking down to others, or retaliating for perceived slights or disagreements.
Self-serving behaviors—Specific examples include, but are not limited to, displaying arrogance,
lacking concern or empathy for others, taking credit for others’ work, insisting on having their
way, distorting information to favor own ideas, exaggerating accomplishments or abilities, putting
own work and accomplishments ahead of others’ and the mission, displaying narcissistic
tendencies, or exhibiting a sense of entitlement.

You have Sergeant with over 6 years of service in your squad/platoon that comes up hot on a urinalysis. What are your actions?
1.Counsel the Soldier on the incident and the fact that separation action will be initiated
2.If the Soldier is in a leadership position, he temporarily removed from the position pending the investigation (if applicable)
3.Soldier is enrolled in SUDC/ASAP
4.FLAG the Soldier
5.Start processing the Soldier for separation / depending on service and/or other factors, Soldier may be entitled to a separation board
6.Recommend the Soldier punishment under UCMJ
A Soldier makes Suicidal Threats. What are your actions?
- Immediately place the Soldier under watch
2.Notify the Chain of Command Recommend that the Soldier be seen by the appropriate medical authority (medical to ensure no immediate physical harm and a preliminary mental health exam for mental state of mind and/or mental health professionals)
3.At the same point in time the Soldier should be counseled concerning adverse effects of attempted suicide on their future and the military. The second, third and fourth order effects…It is more important to seek help first
4.Show concern for the Soldier
5.Should a soldier actually attempt suicide the command can recommend separation from the military based upon the incident and the findings of the appropriate medical authority? again, consider all factors to include: maturity, age, experience, duty performance, and past episodes (Chapters 5-17)
- If a mental evaluation is determined to be appropriate the commander must initiate a written counseling for the non-emergency situation
Your soldier has been sexually assaulted and wants to file a report who can you refer them to?
Their chain of command
Medical Treatment Facility
Military Police/Criminal Investigation
Chaplains
Social Work Services
Family Advocacy
Legal Services
You have a new to the Army transgender soldier joining your unit. Male intact transitioning to female. Soldier does not want to live with a male room mate. No female wants to room with the soldier. It makes the transgender soldier feel uncomfortable. Several soldiers disapprove of the new soldiers life style and feel they get special treatment. How do you resolve conflict without isolating the transgender soldier or show preferential treatment?
1.You can speak with the barracks manager and see if that soldier can get their own room if any are available
- If a room is not available you can look into the regulation about if they can share a room with the gender they identify with and find a soldier who is responsible and trustworthy who is okay with rooming with the new soldier
a soldier in your squad asks to speak to you in private, they then reveal they’re being sexually harassed by another NCO, however they wish to remain anonymous and doesn’t want to make an official report, this soldier has claimed Sexual assault and Harassment before with investigations that led to proving them wrong, what do you do?
- Stop them and inform them as a mandated reporter if they continue to talk to me about the situation I have to report it.
- Let them know the difference between restricted and unrestricted and I would have to push that information to higher which would cause for an unrestricted report so they would not be anonymous if they continued speaking with me.
- You can refer them to the unit SHARP and escort them as well as give them the official Sexual Harassment hotline number 1-800-267-9964
What does it mean to you to be promoted to a SGT/SSG?
It means I will have a greater sphere of influence and can better help and develop other soldiers. It’s a way to continue to help shape the next generation of soldiers
What would you do if one of your soldiers started giving away their possessions?
- Ask them what’s going on, it could be nothing but giving away possessions is a sign of someone possibly thinking of committing suicide
- Follow A.C.E (ask, care, escort) but also talk to them person to person on their level and check in see what you can do to help
