When people are in a crowd they lose a sense of self and fell anonymous and become part of the crowd mentality

The needs of the group are more important than the needs of the individual

The need of the individual are more important that the needs of the group

Helping others without expecting a reward
Authoritarian figure
Someone we view as having more power than ourselves
Agency theory
People obey orders that are ethically wrong because they move from an autonomous state to a genetic state
Autonomous state
Individual feels responsible for their actions
Agentic state
Individuals do not feel responsible for their actions as they are acting under an authority figure
Charismatic leader
There charisma enables them to form a special bond with their followers and allow them to exert power
Criticism of situational factors
Reductionist as it fails to account individual differences. People may obey because of their personality not the situation
Too much research on pro social behaviour is done on kids. Adults may act differently
