situational crime prevention Flashcards
most research into crime is instead on?
most research that forms the basis of criminological theory is not based on crime itself but instead is based on suicide.
the relevance of suicide application to SCP?
research found there was a drastic reduction in suicide rates from 1963-1964, they unexpectadley found that in 1964 toxic gases were replaced with a non toxic gas alternative- therefore people did not stop using gas to commit suicide, it was that it was no longer readily available; this sparked thought- if you remove the opportunity it reduces to ability - linked to crime, crime can be reduced if it is less convenient
define scp
involves the direct manipulation of the imediate environemt, in order to reduce the oppertunities for crime, hence reducing crime
what theory forms the basis of SCP?
rational choice, presumes everyone makes a rasional decisoon of their actions; crime occurs as a result of an evukation between costs vs beneifts, if there is a convenient oppertunity an indiviudal will commit crime
what are the limitations of the claims of SCP?
presumes that everyone is a criminal; the only reason certain people do not commit a crime is bevause they are not provided an oppertuniy; fortress society with no trust
victim blame; their ‘fault’ for allowing an oppertunity
online crime; civil liberties, privacy rights are questioned
root cause not addressed
what is the main issue of SCP?
DISPLACEMENT: scp does not remove or reduce crime it merely displaces it, in this sense if oneopperunity is removed an indiviudal wil find another
what are the different types of displacement and explain them
