When do you elevate a situation up the chain of command?
When it is not with my realm of capability, will delay response, impede us, issue of safety or integrity
What do you do if you’re left alone and unsure of what to do?
Do what I know to do, what will help accomplish task, follow last order
What do you do if you lose radio comms?
Radio, higher ground, cell phone, make noise, start fire, navigate with paper and compass
What do you do if you don’t know the answer to a question?
Let them know, then research the answer
What would you do if you were given an unsafe order/you don’t agree with?
Fully evaluate the situation. Then ask to clarify. Trust that they would not put me in an endangering situation
What would you do if a crew member is isolating themselves?
Approach them away from everyone else. Invite them to join whenever possible. Ask and try to determine why - if they’re having issues in home life, they’re more introverted, need alone time, are having a conflict, homesick
A co-worker is drunk or high at work?
Pull them aside and say they will need to go to crew leader immediately. Offer to go with them. Ensure their safety, crew safety, public safety.
How would you deal with sexual harassment?
No place for it. Must be immediately reported and pushed to be dealt with. Need to determine if its a recurring issue.
How do you handle conflicting orders?
Follow the chain of command. If it is a higher ranking officer then relay to crew lead what the new task is.
How do you handle bullying in the workplace?
Deal with personal conflicts person to person. Maintain professional relationship. Elevate if its persistent.
What would you do if you saw another firefighter steal?
Ask them about it. If they deny or admit to it, it must be elevated as it is an issue of integrity and may continue to happen.
What would you do if a crew member isn’t pulling their weight?
Gently suggest that they need to do things without being bossy. Never report or make it look bad or make myself look better. Ask if they’re struggling, mind out of it, maybe need help with job tasks or fitness.
